"Let my thoughts ,
turn on light bulbs
and my dreams
power space ships .
Let me whisper-on
a television,
Let me tickle
a traffic light green .
Somewhere , there are factories,
fueled by laughter ,
Somewhere , there are cars
running on air .
If this can happen somewhere ,
then why can't that somewhere be here !!
why can't that somewhere be here !! "
Everyday , the world produces Carbon dioxide that is released into the earth's atmosphere and which will be still there , for say a hundred years on . This increased Carbon dioxide content , is a direct bi product of fossil fuel combustion , which serves as the primary source of energy in practice today . The Carbon dioxide content is responsible for "global warming" phenomenon , which threatens to make our living conditions worse than that in the red planet i.e mercury , and the only way out of this impending heat trap is "alternative energy".
"Alternative energy" , a term no longer alien to our dictionaries , relates to energy sources that can replenish themshelves naturally and thus are "free" resources . Moreover , such resources don't have any undesired consequences in our life , and are relatively cleaner substitutes to fossil fuels .
Alternative energy may be derived by tapping natural , free flowing resources like sunlight , winds , hot springs . etc. , or by combustible cleaner sources such as biomass . Alternative energy isn't something new at all , as official documentation suggest it's first use as early as 1219 AD , by the Cretans , as sail-motor windmills to pump water for crops and livestock .
Replacing ancient energy resources with potentially efficient alternatives is a practice going on since ages . Be it , the replacement of "wood" with "coal" , or the presently used "petroleum" replacing "whale oil " , change in energy resources to keep in toe with their potential hazards has been practiced for long .
So on , Today our present dominant sources i.e mainly fossil fuel have outlived their use . It is indeed high time we shift to cleaner alternatives . The transition has already begun with sectors such as power generation , transport . today we need to take the trend forward to other energy intensive sectors as well .
Alternative energy in Industries :
Manufacturing industries accounts for one-third of the total energy use worldwide . Roughly , three quarters of industrial energy use is related to production of energy-intensive commodities such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals , chemicals , petrochemicals , pulp and paper . In these sectors , energy constitutes a large proportion of total production costs , so managers pay particular attention to drive them down , in the process diminishing efforts to deride their hazardous impetus on the environment .
Although renewable energy has recieved a fair deal of attention for power generation and for residential applications , its use in industry has attracted much less attention . Renewable energy plays only a relatively small role in industry today . Biomass currently makes by far the most significant renewable energy contribution to the industry providing around 8 % of its final energy .
However , the scope for expansion are humongous . Analysis predicts a total contribution of 21 % of all final energy use and feed stock can be derived out of renewable energy . This amounts to almost 50 EJ/yr , out of the total industry requirement of 230 EJ/yr .
But for this figures to come live , and for competitiveness of bio-fuels with fossil fuels is strongly dependent on national energy policy frameworks and energy prices . Renewable sources are not cost competitive where fossil fuel are subsidized .
A stronger push for renewable energy in industry can see large contribution to industry fuel requisites by energy sources such as solar thermal energy , heat pumps and bio-mass .
Alternative energy in education :
Education today , with all modern amenities and teaching aid has become an highly energy-intensive sector . The proof is in an around us as we take notice of all the energy consumption in this giant audtorium of gathering . Practice of alternative energy in education serves for a triple point program :
1. releasing pressure on natural resources .
2. Introducing and practising clean and efficient energy usage .
3. Inculcates a habit of renewable source harnessing among the budding future generation .
It must be our aim to make our future generation believe : "sun gives us heat and electricity "
Also in rural areas , children spend a considerable amount of time in livelihood activities like firewood collection , which proves to be the biggest hurdle in education . Introduction of renewable energy can spare considerable amount of time for educational activities .
With this I would like to conclude my thoughts that renewable energy is of paramount importance for utilization in energy-intensive sectors such as industry and education .
